Starbreed Controls
Keyboard, mouse, and gamepad fundamentals
Default keyboard and mouse
Starbreed is built for precise mouse aim on a rail path. Memorize this keyboard baseline before you blame difficulty spikes:
| Action | Default binding |
|---|---|
| Fire primary | Left mouse button |
| Boost / thrust | W |
| Brake | S |
| Barrel roll left / right | A / D |
| Party abilities | Q / E |
| Pause | Space or Esc |
| Aim | Mouse movement |
Gamepad is supported if you prefer sticks and triggers; the same verbs apply—fire, boost, brake, roll, party skills, pause—even if glyphs differ by controller. Remap in options if your hands need it, but learn the verbs first so wiki guides stay readable.
Why boost and brake matter
Boost is mobility and commitment. Assertion on Aether improves boost/thrust recharge, so pilots who dump everything into raw HP may feel “stuck in molasses” when patterns demand lane changes. Brake is the underrated skill: slowing your relative motion creates cleaner tracking on small targets and MITE-style drone setups that reward burst windows. Pair this page with Resolve and Assertion when recharge feels wrong.
Barrel rolls as defense
A / D rolls are not cosmetics. Rail shooters telegraph fans, lasers, and body checks; rolls slip you through arcs that would clip a static hitbox. On bosses with reflective fields or clone pressure (see Boss Guides), rolling while holding fire discipline beats random boosting into walls.
Party abilities on Q and E
Allies bring active skills bound to party ability inputs. Treat Q / E like ultimates with shorter attitudes: save them for armor breaks, swarm deletes, or emergency peel. Passives run automatically—study them on Ally Abilities and rank them via Allies Tier List. Bad timing wastes a kit that Party Comps assumed you would use.
Pause literacy
Space / Esc pause is more than a bathroom break. Use it to read bullet hell stacks, check ability cooldowns, and breathe before a phase transition. Older builds even fixed bugs where ally abilities failed to display while paused—if something looks missing after a patch, re-check Patch Notes.
Aim hygiene
Mouse aim should be smooth, not wrist-breaking flicks every frame. Track along expected enemy lanes; let rails bring targets into pre-aimed cones. Ultrawide players can reference the getting-started gameplay video for framing, then return here when binds feel off.
Practice routine (10 minutes)
- Enter an early stage from Levels Walkthrough.
- Sixty seconds of boost-brake weaving without firing.
- Sixty seconds of roll-only defense against light fire.
- Two minutes firing while rolling—never stop moving your aim intentionally.
- Two minutes practicing one party active on cooldown.
- Finish the stage or die trying; adjust shop buys with Credits Shop.
Accessibility and options
Windowed resolutions (including 1920×1080 and 1280×720 called out in development) help odd aspect ratios. If Steam Input fights your pad, try disabling conflicting overlays. Linux builds exist on itch alongside Windows—verify binds after first launch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common Starbreed questions.
What is the fire button in Starbreed?
Left mouse button on the default keyboard and mouse scheme. Gamepad uses the face/trigger binding shown in options.
How do I barrel roll?
A and D on keyboard by default. Use rolls to slip patterned shots rather than tanking them.
Where are party abilities?
Q and E trigger party actives. Passives apply automatically based on who you brought.
Is gamepad supported?
Yes. Starbreed supports gamepad play alongside keyboard and mouse.
Why is my boost always empty?
Check Assertion investment under the Aether tab and stop panic-tapping W. Manage brake and roll instead.
Can I pause mid-boss?
Yes. Space or Esc pauses so you can read the phase and cooldowns.
